Connor’s Story

When I was 28 weeks pregnant with my first child I was referred to a specialist at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver after my OB saw something strange on an ultrasound.  After an initial ultrasound at St. Luke’s, Dr. Richard Porreco, discovered a CCAM (Congenital Cystic Adenomatoid Malformation) in my son’s right lung.  The CCAM was displacing his good lung tissue and his heart leading to hydrops.  According to doctors, my son, Connor, had less than a 50% chance of being born alive.

Connor by Porreco PG 2

This is an excerpt by the doctor that was in charge of my care at Presbyterian St. Luke’s – I am the patient he is referring to in this article and that is the ultrasound of my son’s chest

As if that information wasn’t bad enough, I was immediately admitted to the hospital and put on bed rest until I gave birth. They didn’t seem to care that at this point I was only a little over halfway through my pregnancy. Little did I know, I was in for six, horrendous weeks of bed rest during which I endured endured seven, painful, in-womb surgeries involving large needles and little to no way to ease the pain in order to drain the CCAM in my son’s chest and remove excess amniotic fluid from me.

Connor by Porreco PG 3

This shows Connor’s diagnosis – Type 1 congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation with mediastinal shift causing hydrops. At 28 wks 6 days pregnant Dr. P performed a fetal thoracentesis (stuck a huge needle through my stomach into Connor’s chest to drain the cyst) and drained 80 cc of fluid off of Connor. Then again at 29 wks and 3 days they drained 88 cc of fluid. At 30 wks 5 days Dr. P drained 700 cc of amnio fluid from me as Connor was unable to swallow it like normal babies do. All in all Dr. P drained my amnio fluid twice and performed 5 in-womb surgeries on Connor. I went into labor at 34 weeks and 4 days. His apgars were terrible – basically, he was not stable and chances of survival looked grim

During that time, I was told over and over by medical staff that my son was gravely ill and that there was a very slim chance of survival for him.

Connor by Porreco PG 4

The natural history of Connor’s diagnosis is one of in utero or early neonatal death

It’s like I was being punched in the stomach every single day. I was scared, angry and overwhelmingly lonely though never alone. I spent a long time feeling sorry for myself and blaming myself for what was happening with my baby and in the beginning, I threw tantrums and fought my “jail sentence”. I wanted nothing more than to escape. I repeatedly asked to leave the hospital just to go to church or see the outside world. I think the doctors thought I was crazy. I think they were right. I didn’t fully comprehend what was happening. I was living in a nightmare that I so desperately wanted to wake up from but I never did. I questioned God and repeatedly asked him, “Why me?” At some point I made a decision to trust God and to put all of my hope in him. The truth was, I had no other hope. No other choice and I’d seen some pretty amazing healing miracles in my family already. The seed of faith was there I just had to water it. So I took control of my situation. I chose to fight. I chose to trust God in the face of death. I chose to trust Him and deny my fears and doubts. I chose to live in a realm outside of the natural. I dove head first into the unknown with God. The God of my childhood, the God of my mother, the God that would soon be my own.

I prayed God’s word over my son all day, every day. I spoke life over him. I praised God for the healing that I believed we would receive speaking what was not true as though it were true (Romans 4:17). Before every in-womb surgery I believed that the CCAM would be gone and I thanked God for Connor’s immediate healing. While that nasty thing came back every single time I didn’t lose faith and become angry with God. No. Instead, I went back to my room, my prison cell, and as I laid in bed hooked up to monitors and contracting from the recent trauma to my uterus, I thanked God. Yep. I thanked Him. I chose to praise Him I chose to praise my God in the most horrific and terrifying storm of my life because He was still God regardless of my circumstance. He was still in control. He was still good; still sovereign. My condition didn’t nullify His position. It was only meant to magnify Him more. To put His glory on display. I marched on. I didn’t curl up and die. I didn’t give up. I looked up. I kept my eyes on my Father. I looked to Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith. I endured.

Finally, after I quit fighting, after I surrendered everything to God my jail sentence ended just as suddenly as it had begun. On January 9, 2008 Nick and I would welcome our six week premature, little miracle, Connor Isaac, into the world, but not without one more fight. (tell quick story of my labor and almost dying)

The doctors warned us that Connor would not cry after delivery but he cried, PRAISE GOD! That swollen, one-eared, gravely-ill, little fighter cried. He cried the weakest cry I had ever heard but it was his and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, the evil cyst inside of my sweet boy was not gone and as Dr. Poreeco was stitching me up the nurses rushed Connor over to the corner of the room to get it drained and then they rushed Connor to the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). Not long after he was delivered, a surgeon came to my room asking for consent to perform surgery.  She told us that Connor was not stable and the CCAM needed to be removed immediately.  She also informed us that the odds of him surviving surgery were very bad but she would do her best; as she spoke she was shaking, she radiated fear.  At that point I was especially glad that I have been redeemed, that my hope and trust are not in man, but in the one true, living God.  My husband signed the consent papers and she left.

Newborn Connor

My sweet baby boy’s newborn picture

Once again we turned to God.  We began to pray out loud in the spirit and tell the enemy that Connor was a child of God, that he could not have him, and that Connor was healed.  We called on God again and believed that Connor would live through the surgery.  Only a few minutes later the surgeon returned, and with good news!  The CCAM disappeared!!!  They did an ultrasound of Connor’s chest to determine where they would need to operate and they couldn’t find the CCAM; and better yet, Connor stabilized!  Our God is SOOO AWESOME!!!

Three days later the CCAM was back but this time Connor was stable enough for surgery.  But I was not so sure.  To me, allowing Connor to have surgery would be admitting that God was not in control, that he could not heal my baby.  But God had a plan, he made something wonderful happen.  My pastor visited me in the hospital.  He asked to pray over Connor and my husband and I heartily accepted his request.  We took him to Connor’s isolette, his temporary baby bed.  Pastor R. laid hands on our son, claiming God’s healing promises for him, calling down power from Heaven, and taking his place beside us on our battlefield for Connor’s life.  I admitted to my pastor my apprehension in regards to Connor having surgery and the blow it could issue to my faith.  He gently reminded me that God uses people and their gifts for his good.  God works through people.  Sweet relief!  I immediately felt my guilt subside; Connor would have surgery and I would still put my trust in God to bring him through.  On January 12, 2008 my precious son became the 1st  baby to undergo a laparoscopic lung surgery; 2/3 of his right lung were removed and afterward Connor spent 1 month in the NICU.

During that month my family and I prayed over him, anointed him with oil, and continued to speak in faith.  I used to anoint Psalm 145 in my Bible and read it over and over and over to Connor.  God watched over his word to perform it, his word did not and never will return void.  Connor came home on February 8, 2008; such an incredible gift from God!  The doctors said that Connor would be on oxygen for 1 year and Connor came off of oxygen just shy of 3 months old!  We were told that Connor may always have just 1/3 of a right lung but at 1 year old Connor was discharged from his lung surgeon’s care because his lung re-grew!

Prayer Challenge – Day 7

“You, Lord, are my choice, and I will obey you.  With all my heart I beg you to be kind to me, just as you have promised.  I pay careful attention as you lead me, and I follow closely.  As soon as you command, I do what you say,” Psalm 119:57-60.

Father, may my family and I be at rest in Your presence as our hearts are kept safe and pure in Your loving hands.  Let us always worship You with all of our hearts and do not let us walk away from Your life-giving commands.  Teach us to treasure Your word above all else and let it keep us from sinning against You.  Let my family and I always praise You, Lord.  Don’t let us question Your character; You are always good and Your motives are always pure!  Your ways are righteous and You deal justly with Your children.  My family and I will never forget that, God.  We will never let our circumstances tarnish Your good name.  Our love for You will never be spoiled and our hearts will remain pure and fixed on You and Your laws.

Give us wisdom and understanding in abundance.  Let us continually discover the wonders of Your law.  Point out your rules to us with kindness and patience and we will not disobey even one of them.  Direct us by Your commands!  We love to do what You say.  Just as David said, make my family and me want to obey you, rather than to be rich.  Take away our foolish desires, and let us find life by walking with you.  We are Your servants!  Do for us as You have promised to do for those who worship You.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Purity:

  • 1 Timothy 1:5 – “The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.”

Prayer:  Connor and Blake are filled with love; love that comes from their pure hearts, clear consciences and genuine faith.  My sons are quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that You desire. Connor and Blake turn from all moral filth and evil and they humbly accept Your word that has been planted in them.  Save them, Lord!

Keep their thoughts and actions pure and wholesome.  Lead them not into temptation but into a deeper understanding of Your values and of the desires that You have planted in their hearts.  Root out anything that the enemy has placed in my sons hearts or minds in an attempt to destroy them.  Their hearts and minds are guarded in Your Son, Jesus.  My sons are under Your covering, Lord.  They are protected from impurity and lawlessness in all forms.  They walk in the light of Your truth at the edge of this world; they do not conform to it.  Make them determined to follow after You and Your laws, God.  Let them be caught when they do wrong and speak renewal and healing into their hearts, minds, and souls in the places in which they are broken.  Help them to strengthen themselves in You from a young age, God.

Do not let them rely on anyone else to help them cultivate a loving and devoted relationship with You.  Make them realize that it is up to them to follow You and get to know You better.  Plant a desire to know You more in Connor and Blake’s hearts and let them stick by each other in the face of resistance; let them encourage each other in You, God.  Two are stronger than one; my sons are strong because they do not depart from one another or from You.

  • 1 John 3:3 – “And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.”

Prayer:  Connor and Blake live in eager expectation of Your second coming, Lord Jesus.  In their expectation they keep themselves pure just as You are pure.  Help them.  Staying pure and clean in this blemished and dirty world is difficult.  Let my sons lean on You, Jesus.  Continually intercede for them and plead their case to Your Father as You sit at His righteous right hand.  I pray that Connor and Blake would be white as snow and that their hearts would be clean and upright in Your sight, Oh God.  See my sons through the righteousness bought for them by Your Son.  They are cloaked in forgiveness and grace.  Your mercy has been poured over them like cleansing waters, washing away the dirt of sin.  Let Connor and Blake not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

  • James 1:27 – “Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”

Prayer:  Father, Connor and Blake practice pure and genuine religion in Your eyes.  They care for orphans and widows in their distress; they do not let the world corrupt them.  My sons are not concerned with accumulating worldly possessions, God.  Instead, they are concerned with being the hands and feet of Your ministry on this earth.  Let them give generously to the least of these.  Let them love as You love.  Send my sons to the hurting and the helpless in this world, Father.  Break their hearts for what breaks Yours, God, and convict them to make a difference!  Cultivate a kind and compassionate spirit in each of them.  Make my sons good stewards of their finances and the provisions that You have blessed them with so that they may bless others.  With cheerful hearts Connor and Blake will give You more than their first fruits.  They will give to You and bless Your Kingdom, Lord, especially when their flesh would tell them that they have nothing to give.  Let my sons give out of their emptiness and lack in each area of their lives and give it back to them in good measure; create a cycle of blessing, Lord.

  • Philippians 4:8 – “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

Prayer:  Connor and Blake fix their thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.  They only think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.  Lord, I ask You to continually fill them with the knowledge of Your will through all the wisdom and understanding that Your Spirit gives.  Let them live lives worthy of Your Son’s sacrifice.  In every way my sons will bear fruit in every good work they do and they will grow in the true knowledge of You, God.  Strengthen them with all power according to Your glorious might so that they may have great endurance and patience.  Help them to give joyful thanks to You, Father, because You have given them an eternal inheritance; they are part of Your holy people in Your Kingdom of Light.  You rescued them from the dominion of darkness and brought the sons that I love into the kingdom of the Son that You love.  Thank You!!  May Your Son’s sacrifice never be in vain!!

  • Matthew 5:8 – “God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.”

Prayer:  God, bless Connor and Blake for they are pure in heart.  Let them see You!  Open the eyes of my sons, God.  Let them see wonderful things from Your law.  Do not let them live in darkness; let them always see Your light shining for them.  Do not let my sons lose sight of the blessings that You have laid out before them.  Teach them to be content and hopeful in all situations so that they will not miss opportunities to claim blessings in disguise.  Show Connor and Blake how to be led by Your word and not by their emotions.  Remind them to clothe themselves each day in Your grace and in the armor of Your word.  Let Your peace and righteousness permeate their souls and cast out any impurity.  Connor and Blake will lead pure and godly lives in constant praise of Your law and honest love for You.

  • Job 16:17 – “Yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure.”

Prayer:  Connor and Blake’s hands are free of violence, God, and their prayers are pure.  The righteousness of their Savior covers them; they are sin-free in Your eyes, Lord.  Jesus is Connor and Blake’s advocate.  He is their witness.  He is always interceding for my sons; He pleads for mercy on their behalf.  Jesus never turns His ear away from the cries of my sons.  Let them always remember this; stamp it on their hearts and minds forever.  Remind them to pray without ceasing because they are always heard and always answered.  You, Lord, hear their cries and You save them.  My sons know You, God; they acknowledge You and they love You in deed and in profession.  My sons love You and Your laws with sincerity and conviction; their love is true.  Connor and Blake devour every word that comes from Your mouth and they do not turn from Your ways.

  • Proverbs 20:11 – “Even children are known by the way they act, whether their conduct is pure, and whether it is right.”

Prayer:  Though Connor and Blake are children they are known by the way they act.  Let their conduct be pure and right, God.  One day my sons will not be children and they will be fully responsible for their actions.  Please let Your laws be printed on their minds, let Your word be firmly planted in their hearts, and let their souls be deeply rooted in Your living water long before they are fully grown.  My children will be mature in Your wisdom, Lord, before they are mature in physical stature.  May everything they say and do be a reflection of Your love and laws.  Make my sons wise enough to learn what You have commanded so that they may be found pure in Your eyes.  Connor and Blake will know that You are their place of safety and their shield.  Your word is their only hope; Your name is their strong tower.

  • Philippians 1:9-10 – “I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.”

Prayer:  God, let Connor and Blake’s love overflow more and more and let them keep on growing in Your knowledge and in their understanding if Your ways.  I want my sons to understand what really matters.  I want them to know that living their lives in pursuit of You and in line with Your statutes is the only way to achieve success in this life.  Engrain this concept into their hearts and minds.  Fill my sons with wisdom.  God, help Connor and Blake to live pure and blameless lives until Jesus’ return.  My sons will not chase after fleeting and meaningless pleasures.  They will stay grounded in Your word and hopeful in Your promises.  They trust in You and they will not be shaken or deceived.  They will follow in Your footsteps, Lord Jesus, and they will not falter.  For You command Your angels concerning them, God, to guard them in all their ways.  They will not strike their feet upon stones.  No disasters will come near their dwelling places.  No temptation will overcome them.  They will remain in You and You will remain in them.

  • Psalm 119:9 – “How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.”

Prayer:  Connor and Blake stay pure while they are young and into old age by obeying Your word, Lord.  Your teachings are wonderful,     and my sons respect them all.  Understanding Your word brings light to their minds.  They honestly want to know everything You teach, so teach them.  Think about my sons and remember Your love for them.  Be kind to them for they love Your name and Your statutes are their counselors.   Keep your promises to them and don’t let them stumble or let sin control their lives.  Protect them from the evil one so that they can obey Your laws and live in peace and safety.

  • Philippians 2:15 – “So that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.”

Prayer:  Father, don’t let Connor and Blake be criticized; they live clean and innocent lives as Your sons.  They shine like bright lights in this world full of crooked and perverse people.  They will not turn from Your laws; they will continue to work out their salvation with fear and trembling.  It is You, God, who works in my sons; will them to act in order to fulfill Your good purpose.  Help them to do everything without grumbling  or arguing so that they will shine among the corrupt like stars in the sky.  Let Connor and Blake hold firmly to Your word for it is life and health to their bodies.  Let them go where You have called them and let their attitudes and actions be pleasing in Your sight, God, so that they may rejoice when Your Son returns.

Prayer Challenge – Day 6

“I will look favorably upon you, making you fertile and multiplying your people. And I will fulfill my covenant with you. You will have such a surplus of crops that you will need to clear out the old grain to make room for the new harvest! I will live among you, and I will not despise you. I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be my people,” Leviticus 26:9-13.

Father, continue to give breath to my family’s and my prayers. Jump start the heart beat of my desire as I cover my family from head to toe in Your word. Let my family and I replace our sinful desires with a burning desire for You, God. Let Your promises give life to the cry of our hearts. Never let the waters of Your healing Presence run dry within our spirits. Keep our hearts turned toward to You. Let us bask in Your glory and eat of the fruit of Your spirit. Cleanse us in Your mercies and clothe us in the splendor of Your majesty.

I long for my family to shine brighter than diamonds in this world. As we do the work of Your Kingdom and let Your love bring healing and truth to the broken, let us be more precious than gold in Your sight. Lord, in Your unfailing love, please dip the ladle of mercy in the fountain of Your grace and let it rain down blessings on my family and me as we journey toward the Cross. Our eyes and hearts are fixed on You. All the days of our lives Your praises are on our lips and our thoughts are fixed on Your laws. We love You, God. May Your light always shine for us.  In Jesus’ sweet name I pray.  Amen.

Pride:

  • Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake are not prideful or haughty. Their paths will not lead to destruction and they will not fall. Lord, examine my sons’ motives and find them to be pure. My sons fear You and they avoid evil. They live lives pleasing to You and even their enemies are at peace with them. Connor and Blake listen to instruction and they will prosper. They trust You, Lord, and they find fullness of joy in Your presence. Your grace is sufficient for Connor and Blake. Your strength is made perfect in their weaknesses. Therefore my sons will gladly boast in their infirmities, needs and trials and Your power, Lord Jesus, will rest on them. Because when they admit their weaknesses to You, they receive supernatural strength. Through their honesty and humility Your grace and power go to work in the arenas they struggle in most and they are released from the bondage of sin; free to live in victory in You, Jesus.

  • Proverbs 29:23 – “Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.”

Connor and Blake are not brought to humiliation because they are not prideful. You honor them Lord, because they are humble. My sons do not lose their tempers like fools but they keep quiet because they are wise. They are slow to anger and rich in love. The words of their mouths are pleasing in Your sight, God. Connor and Blake seek Your counsel in all they do, Lord, and You grant them success. They do not follow the desires of their flesh but they follow You and Your will for their lives.

  • Job 33:17 – “He makes them turn from doing wrong; he keeps them from pride.”

Prayer: Father, You make Connor and Blake turn from doing wrong and You keep them from pride. Only You can change their hearts and their desires Lord. Only You can place Your Spirit in them and make them obedient to You and Your laws. My sons do not have hearts of stone but hearts of flesh. They are responsive to Your voice, to Your will, to Your love. They fall on their knees before Your throne and forfeit their lives to You. Connor and Blake are Your obedient servants, they are Your loving sons and faithful vessels for the weight of Your glory. Use them! God, when they pray to You accept them. Receive my boys with joy. Restore them to good standing. Let them declare with their mouths that sin is worthless. Keep them silent and responsive, Father, and teach them Your wisdom.

  • Leviticus 26:19- “I will break your proud spirit by making the skies as unyielding as iron and the earth as hard as bronze.”

Prayer: Please break Connor and Blake’s spirits, Lord, and keep them from pride. Do not make the skies unyielding or the earth hard for them. Bless the work of their hands. Cause them to prosper in all they do. My sons will not set up idols in their hearts; they serve You alone! Make them lie down and sleep without fear; keep them safe. Make their enemies fall at their feet and shut their mouths so they cannot speak against C & B. Fulfill Your covenant with my sons, Lord.

  • Proverbs 13:10- “Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.

Prayer: Father, do not let Connor and Blake be led to conflict through the trap of pride. Instead, teach them to heed Your commands and take advise from godly counsel. My sons are wise for they heed Nick’s instruction, they are not mockers who ignore rebuke. They do not have an appetite for violence but they delight in Your laws and seek lives of peace and meekness. C & B guard their lips and You preserve their lives, Lord. You fully satisfy my sons’ desires for they are diligent. Connor and Blake are shielded by Your righteousness, Lord God, they have great integrity.

  • Proverbs 21:24- “Mockers are proud and haughty; they act with boundless arrogance.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake are not proud or haughty; they do not act with boundless arrogance. Lord in Your loving hands the hearts of my sons flow like rivers channeled toward all that pleases You. Connor and Blake are not foolish. They know that Your ways are right, God, and that their steps are directed by Your word. My sons understand that they can’t do anything without You. Weigh their hearts, God, and see that their motives are pure. Search them and know them; they love and honor You with all of their hearts, souls and strength. My sons do what is just and pleasing in Your sight, Father, and their sacrifices are acceptable to You. May Connor and Blake bring You joy all the days of their lives, Father.

  • 2 Corinthians 7:4- “I have the highest confidence in you, and I take great pride in you. You have greatly encouraged me and made me happy despite all our troubles.”

Prayer: God, Connor and Blake have the highest confidence in You. They take great pride in You and Your laws. Lord, You have greatly encouraged my sons and in You their joy is complete despite their troubles. My sons purify themselves from everything that contaminates their bodies and spirits; they concentrate on perfecting holiness out of reverence for You. My sons do not fear bad news. Their hearts are steadfast, trusting in You.

  • Galatians 6:4 – “Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake pay careful attention to their own work and they get the satisfaction of a job well done. They don’t need to compare themselves to anyone else. My sons will never fall prey to envy. They walk the paths that You have laid out for them, Lord, and they are glad in You. They lean not on their own understanding. They seek Your wisdom and guidance in all they do. Connor and Blake know that You have good plans for them, Father. Plans to prosper them and give them a hopeful and bright future.

  • Psalm 36:11 – “Don’t let the proud trample me or the wicked push me around.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake will not be trampled by the proud or pushed around by the wicked, Lord. Your favor and love will never leave them. You go before them, God, and You lead them to victory. My sons are bold and courageous. You cover them with Your feathers and undr Your mighty wings they find refuge.

  • 1 Samuel 2:3 – “Stop acting so proud and haughty! Don’t speak with such arrogance! For the Lord is a God who knows what you have done; he will judge your actions.”

They long to live for You and they put Your desires above their own. May You find that my sons always do what is right in your eyes. Let Connor and blake follow Your laws with diligence and seek You with all of their hearts, God.

Prayer Challenge – Day 5

Lord, keep reminding my family and me of Your laws so that we will not be called fools. Let us walk in Your wisdom and delight in Your commands so that we will be called wise and so You will bless us. May my family and I avoid getting tied up in the affairs of this world so we may be called good soldiers in Christ. Let us be strengthened in our love for You and Your laws and the love You have for us. May our faith and hope in You bind us together. Let my family and me never be separated from You or from each other; for Your word states, “three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken,” my family and I will not be broken or led astray. We follow our father’s good advice; we don’t wander off from our mother’s teachings. We wrap ourselves in them from head to foot; we wear them like a scarf around our necks. Wherever we walk, they’ll guide us; whenever we rest, they’ll guard us. When we wake up, they’ll tell us what’s next. For sound advice is a beacon, good teaching is a light, moral discipline is a life path. My family and I follow sound advice that lines up with Your laws. Your word is a light to our paths and a lamp to our feet. Help us to always walk the path of moral discipline for it is the path of life.

Avoiding Foolishness:

  • Titus 3:9 – “But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.

Prayer: May Connor and Blake avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. My sons will abstain from sinful desires, which war against their souls. Sanctify them in truth, Lord. Renew them with Your word for Your word is truth.

  • 2 Timothy 2:23 – ”Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake will not get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. My sons are peace makers and they are blessed; they shall be called Your Sons. Connor and Blake give gentle answers and turn away wrath, they do not speak harshly to stir up anger. My sons are men of honor because they avoid strife. They are not fools who are quick to quarrel. Connor and Blake will not fall into the trap of pride because pride breeds quarrels. Instead, they are humble and they seek godly counsel therefore wisdom is found in them.

  • Ephesians 5:4 – “Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake do not speak in obscene stories, foolish talk or coarse jokes. Instead, they speak words of thankfulness and praise to You. Lord, let the words of Connor and Blake’s mouths and the meditations of their hearts be pleasing in Your sight. Make them watch your tongues and keep their mouths shut so that they will stay out of trouble. Give Connor and Blake gentle tongues which are trees of life, do not let perverseness in to break their spirits. They have mouths of righteousness because they utter wisdom and speak justice.

  • Matthew 7:26 – “But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake are not foolish. They hear Your teachings and they obey. They do not build their homes on sand but on You, for You are the Rock of Ages. With You and Your commands as their foundation and their desire, they will not be shaken. My sons are not only hearers of Your word but they are also doers of Your word.

  • Ecclesiastes 4:13 – “It is better to be a poor but wise youth than an old and foolish king who refuses all advice.”

Prayer: Lord, do not let Connor and Blake ever refuse godly counsel. Instead, let them seek out companions who sharpen them as iron sharpens iron. Let my sons always hear good counsel, receive instruction with open hearts, and accept correction with humility, that they may be wise in the time to come. Connor and Blake will heed the guidance of the godly and they will not fall; they will be safe in the multitude of counselors.

  • Titus 3:3 – “Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other.”

Prayer: Lord, may Connor and Blake never be foolish or disobedient. Do not let them be deceived or misled. Do not let them become slaves to their flesh, bound by many lusts and pleasures. Do not let their lives be full of evil and envy, do not let them live in hate. But let them live lives cloaked in the righteousness and grace of Christ. Let them live in the freedom given to them because of Your loving-kindness and goodness. Out of Your mercy, Lord, You sent Your Son to save my sons so that they may be cleansed and renewed by the Holy Spirit. They accept this new birth which You have so graciously given them and they walk in the freedom which it has afforded them. They are not bound by the law of sin or by their fleshly desires. Connor and Blake have been conformed to the divine will and purpose to which You have called them. They are heirs to the eternal life which You have made available for them through Jesus’ sacrifice. Let my sons always set their eyes on the hope of glory. Let them learn to apply themselves to good deeds (to honest labor and honorable employment), so that they will not live idle and uncultivated and unfruitful lives.

  • Proverbs 14:7 – “Stay away from fools, for you won’t find knowledge on their lips.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake will stay away from fools and self-confident people, for they will not find knowledge on their lips. They will seek out companions whom walk in uprightness and whom reverently and fear You, God. My sons and their companions will not live lives contrary to Your commands; their lives will line up with Your word and Your laws. Connor and Blake are not simple-minded, they are prudent and they will be crowned with knowledge. They devise good therefore loving-kindness and mercy, loyalty and faithfulness, shall be theirs. My sons have strong confidence and their children shall always have a place of refuge for they reverently fear You, Lord. Connor and Blake will not be snared by death but they will receive a fountain of life because they fear You with reverence and worship, God. Your favor, Oh Lord, rests upon my sons because they are wise and discreet servants. May You never turn Your wrath upon them for they will not live shamefully in Your eyes. Connor and Blake do not act in envy, jealousy or wrath and their bones will not be rotted. Instead, they act in wisdom, love, obedience and humility and they have calm and undisturbed minds and hearts which bring life and health to their bodies.

  • Ephesians 5:17 – “Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake do not act thoughtlessly, but they understand what You want them to do, Lord. My sons have the mind of Christ. They take every thought captive into Your obedience, Lord Jesus. They are transformed by the renewing of their minds because they meditate on Your precepts day and night, God. Do not let my sons delude and deceive themselves with empty excuses and groundless arguments; Connor and Blake are not sons of rebellion and disobedience and they do not associate with people who are. My sons are light in You, Lord. They walk as children of the Light. For the fruit of the Light consists in every form of kindly goodness, uprightness of heart, and trueness of life. They have learned what is pleasing to You and their lives are constant proof of what is most acceptable to You. Connor and Blake take no part in and have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds and enterprises of darkness; their lives are lived in contrast to the lives of those who live in darkness. Connor and Blake’s ways expose and convict those who live in darkness. My sons are awake in You, Jesus, they have arisen from the dead and You shine upon them and give them light. You also shine through them, Lord Jesus, and let others see Your love and Your truth in them so that they too may arise from the dead and be awake in You.

  • Proverbs 19:1 – “Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and a fool.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake are honest and broken in spirit. They are not dishonest fools and proud in their hearts. They are not foolish men who subvert their ways or ruin their affairs; their hearts are not resentful toward You, Lord. My sons gain wisdom because they love their lives and they understand Your ways so they shall prosper and find good all the days of their lives. Connor and Blake do not hear instruction only to ignore it andstray from the words of knowledge. They are doers of the word of the one true God. Connor and Blake are not slothful and their hands are not idle and they will not go hungry. My sons are led to life by You, Lord, because they love You and they live in awe of You and Your ways. They will rest satisfied in Your presence and they cannot be visited with evil. Connor and Blake keep Your commandments, God, and they keep their lives, they do not despise Your ways. My sons have pity on the poor and give freely to You and You repay them ten-fold. They do not despise discipline therefore Nick and I discipline them while there is still hope. We do not exasperate them and set them to ruin. With Your help, Father, we bring C & B up in Your instruction.

  • Ecclesiastes 10:2 – “A wise person chooses the right road; a fool takes the wrong one.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake are wise therefore they choose the right road. They do not act as fools and take the wrong one. Their words are gracious and win them favor with You, Lord, and with men for they are wise. My sons do not think on or speak curses; their thoughts and words are pleasing in Your sight, God. Connor and Blake succeed in all that they do; You bless the work of their hands, Lord, for they work with wisdom and diligence. My sons live their lives with gentle and calm spirits and no one will be able to open their mouths against them. Connor and Blake are not like those who observe the wind [and wait for all conditions to be favorable] and do not sow, and they are not like those who regard the clouds and will not reap. In the morning they sow your seeds, and in the evening they do not withhold their hands, for they know not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether both alike will be good. My sons behold the sun with their eyes and walk in the light and they have sweet and pleasant lives. Connor and Blake rejoice in their adolescence and their hearts cheer them in the days of their youth. They walk not in the ways of their hearts and in the sight of their eyes. My sons are free from the lusts of their hearts and they are not brought to sorrow and their minds are not consumed with evil thoughts. Their youth is not spent in vain, devoid of truth because they are obedient to You, Lord, and they love Your laws.

Prayer Challenge – Day 4

“You have captured my heart,
my treasure, my bride.
You hold it hostage with one glance of your eyes,
with a single jewel of your necklace,” Song 4:9.

Lord, You have captured my heart and the hearts of my three boys. You are our treasure. May Your laws always hold our hearts and minds hostage. May we follow You with reckless abandon, forsaking all sense of self. Let us clothe ourselves in the jewels of Your presence; in righteousness, love, grace, wisdom, strength, justice, mercy, integrity, freedom, truth, faithfulness and purity of heart. May we be blind and deaf to the temptation of this world. We will not be deceived; we are doers of the word, not only hearers! Let my family and me remain humble in Your sight, Lord, so that You will lift us up.

Integrity:

1 Kings 9:4 – “As for you, walk before Me as your father David walked, with a true heart doing what is right. Do all that I have told you. Obey My Laws.”

Prayer: May C & B walk before You in the land of the living, Lord. May they walk just as King David did: in truth and integrity and with their hearts fixed forever on You. Let them do all that You have told them and willingly obey Your commands. They shall know Your ways, Lord, and walk in Your truth. They praise You alone. Forever my sons will glorify Your holy name! Let Connor and Blake love You, God, with all of their hearts, souls and minds. The first commandment is written upon their hearts for all time! Like David, let my sons worship You to give to You and not to get; they seek You not out of selfish gain but out of awe and thanksgiving. They worship You in love and truth. Connor and Blake are obedient to You; they have hearts that seek after You, God, not their own desires.

Job 27:5 – “I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my integrity until I die.”

Prayer: Lord, may my sons never compromise their integrity. They will not enter the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil. They are blessed because they are peacemakers and Your sons. Connor and Blake hunger and thirst for righteousness and You satisfy them, God. My sons seek You with all their hearts and they keep Your testimonies. My sons will defend integrity all the days of their lives; as they defend integrity and Your Holy name, Lord, may You always defend them and preserve their lives.

  • Psalm 101:2 – “I will be careful to live a blameless life—
when will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home.”

Prayer: C & B refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. They hate all who deal crookedly; they will have nothing to do with them. My boys will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil. They will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. My boys will not endure conceit and pride. They will search for faithful people to be their companions.Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve them and be served by them. Connor and Blake will not allow deceivers to serve in their homes, and liars will not stay in their presence. My sons will sing of Your love and justice Lord and praise You with songs. Always be near to them Lord, for they call on You in truth and seek You with all of their hearts. Help them lead lives of integrity at home and in public. May Nick and I serve as godly examples to our sons and may our home be full of integrity and righteousness with Your help and by Your grace and strength, Lord.

  • Titus 2:7 – “And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.”

Prayer: God, let Connor and Blake live their lives as a testament to You and Your laws. May they shine like lights in this dark world. May their lives reflect Your wholesome teaching, Father. Help my sons to walk in wisdom, self-control, honesty, obedience and peace. Let them follow Your commands and pursue Your will with their minds, hearts, spirits and souls. My sons do not pursue their own selfish gain or follow sinful desires. Connor and Blake do not love their lives more than they love to submit to Your will for them, Lord. They love truth and follow it with fierce devotion and steadfastness of heart.

  • Luke 1:27 – “To a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.”

Prayer: Just as Joseph did not turn from Your will for his life, C & B will not turn from Your will for their lives. They will faithfully submit. My boys accept You as their Lord and King. Connor and Blake believe with all of their hearts that righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne. They do not question Your authority or pervert Your character.

  • Daniel 1:8 – “But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.”

Prayer: Like Daniel, Connor and Blake are determined and strong in heart. They live their lives according to Your laws, God. My sons live in integrity and they do not defile themselves by doing what is unacceptable in Your sight. Even when no one is watching, they will do what is right in Your sight, Lord, for they can go nowhere from Your presence. Just like Daniel, Connor and Blake show perfect obedience to You and Your laws, God, and they will be brought great favor with You and with man.

  • Philippians 4:11 – “Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.”

Prayer: Lord, let Connor and Blake learn the secret to being content in all situations; write it upon their minds and plant it in their hearts. Let the revealed truth of trust in Your will and Your capabilities really live in their spirits. For my sons can do all things through You, Lord Jesus, for You give them strength.

  • 1 Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake have put their hope in You, God, You are their Savior and the Savior of all men. They do their best to live a life of godliness and train themselves diligently in Your ways. As You were with Moses, so You are with my sons. Their enemies will not be able to stand up against them all the days of their lives and no one will be able to open their mouths against them in judgment. For they are Your servants, Lord. You bless them and keep them in all their ways and You surround them with Your favor as with a shield. You exalt Connor and Blake high above their enemies. Your everlasting arms hold them up. My son’s are bold and courageous. They will not fear or be dismayed because You are with them wherever they go. Connor and Blake are not conformed to the things of this world, but rather they are transformed by the renewing of their minds. They set an example for other believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. My sons fully devote themselves to Your service, God, and they do not neglect their gifts which You have given them. My sons are diligent in these matters; they give themselves wholly to You and they persevere in abiding by and teaching Your commands so as to save both themselves and those whom they teach.

  • 1 Samuel 17:45-47 – “David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”

Prayer: Lord, may Connor and Blake be as bold and courageous as King David. May they love You and Your laws with a ferocity and loyalty without match. Their faith in You and obedience to Your commands intermingle with Your unfailing love holding their hearts and minds securely without fear of falling into bondage to the enemy. Connor and Blake’s hearts and minds have been taken into captivity in Christ; in You they are safely hidden forevermore. May my sons know that You are with them always, Lord, and that You will never leave or forsake them all the days of their lives. Let them trust that You will lead them to the place which You have promised and that You will continue he good works You have begun in them. Connor and Blake will be still and wait patiently and expectantly on You to fight their battles. They know that You will always lead them to victory through Your Son. You are their great deliverer. You are their Jehovah Nissi; the Lord their Banner. They keep their eyes focused on You and their hands lifted to Your throne in praise and they will be victorious in all things.

  • (Genesis 12) Hebrews 11:8 – By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.”
Genesis 22:15-18 – “The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”

Prayer: Connor and Blake have great faith evidenced by their total obedience to You and Your statutes, Lord. You will surely bless them and make their descendants as numerous as the stars. They will be mighty in the land and they will be blessed because they are upright in their hearts. May Connor and Blake always remember Romans 8:28 and live out their trust in You as they faithfully and peacefully climb the path before them. May my sons always reach out and encourage fellow believers and lead the lost to You along the way. Connor and Blake will receive their inheritance in You, their Heavenly Father, because they are faithful to You and Your statutes.

Hide it in their Hearts…

“I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you,” Psalm 119:11.

As I tucked Connor in I finished up our bed time prayers, “Lord, please reveal yourself to Connor. He wants to know You more. He seeks You with all of his heart. Let him find You. Be near to Him because he loves You and he calls on You in truth.” With a kiss on the cheek I slowly started to rise from my knees. “Mom, one of our prayers makes me sad. You know, the one that says, ‘I do things against Him.’ Why did you say that?” My heart sank at the thought of my sweet Connor being sad as I covered him in prayer. While I was speaking life over him, he thought I was speaking condemnation. Prayer is the one aspect of motherhood that I have not failed at, but suddenly I’m failing at prayer too? Seriously?

Shocked, I knelt next to his bed again as I silently asked my Heavenly Father for wisdom in answering my son. Without hesitation God answered my prayer. I sought His face and He met me at Connor’s bedside. Taking Connor’s hand in mine I spoke lovingly to my child, “Connor, I’m not saying sad prayers, baby. Everything I’m praying is happy. I’m asking God to protect you and help you. I’m praying for you to be happy and good. I’m asking God to help you to live the way He wants you to. I asked God to help you put the things that He says to do inside of your heart so you won’t do things that God doesn’t like; bad things. I only want you to do things that make God happy.” As the smile spread across Connor’s face I knew that God had once again been faithful to His promise. He revealed Himself to Connor through a simple bed time prayer.

I am in awe of God’s love! How amazing He is! But I’m not the only one who was awed by God’s love tonight. Before he would let me leave his room, Connor made me take the small, hand-painted, Peruvian cross off of his wall and give it to him; he wanted to sleep with it. “I just want to be close to God, mom.” With that, he rolled over and closed his eyes. I closed my eyes too; and silently gave thanks to my God.

Lord, as I speak Your word over my sons continue to plant it firmly in their minds, hearts and souls. Water it with Your spirit and help them to grow it with faith so that they will bear godly fruit. Let them eat from the tree of life as they delight in your statutes and go where You lead. Let them be sensitive to Your still, small voice. They are Your sheep, Jesus, and the voice of a stranger they will not follow. Thank You for Your love and faithfulness, Lord. Nick and I could never do this alone! Continue to direct our steps and we will follow. As a family, let us grow in wisdom and stature, and favor with You and man. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

For My Sons

Sleep little child and rest without fear; there's a light in the dark & an angel who's near

Jesus is stronger than all the bad guys; he fights them with his sword.  He is bigger than all the scary monsters; he chases them out of sight.  He makes your room so cozy so you can sleep safe at night.

Jesus is sweeter than any ice cream; vanilla is no match.  He is so much better than any fruit snack; compared to him they aint “all that”.

Jesus is brighter than any flashlight; he will always light the way.  He is more constant than your heartbeat; he will NEVER go away.

Jesus heals boo boos faster than any band-aid; all you have to do is ask.  He gets rid of all your growing pains; for him it is a simple task.

Jesus loves you more than a million; times infinity doesn’t even come close.  He has a plan for you; better than anything you could dream.  He listens to your every word; even when it doesn’t seem.

Jesus promised to never leave your side; he is always with you to teach you and to guide.  He has the answer to all of your problems.  He can fix a broken heart.

Jesus makes you happy; he dries up all your tears.  He walks alongside you; he lives in your heart.  He is a new beginning; a brand new start.

Jesus is the answer to all of your questions; the key to every door.  He wants you to walk in his footsteps; blessings you will find.

My sons, if you would grant mommy just one small request; something that is so important, it means more than the rest.  Please promise me that you will give Jesus your heart and walk with him forevermore.  Live a life that is pleasing to him and be glad for what is in store.

Giant Baby

Giant Baby or G.B. likes to poop in the bathtub.  I never had a “poop problem” with C so I am unsure of how to deal with it now.

C and G.B. take baths together every night after dinner, it’s part of our “bed time routine”.  Apparently pooping is also a part of Giant Baby’s bed time routine.  Everyone in the house is completely disgusted by G.B.’s addition to the routine except for G.B. of course.  C is especially upset by this new habit of Giant Baby’s as it has turned one of his favorite past times into a nightmarish ordeal.  Poor C.  If I leave the boys alone in the tub long enough to grab p.j.s and a diaper there will be an incident.  C will inevitably yell, “Mom!  Giant Baby pooped a poop snake in the bath tub!” or “Mom!  Giant Baby pooped some marbles!”  I never want to hear those words come out of C’s mouth again.  God help me find a solution to this problem!  When I got pregnant with G.B. I never thought that I would have to clean poop out of a bath tub so many times!  I went through a bottle of bleach in a span of 2 weeks!

Last week G.B. pooped in the tub a total of 3 nights in a row!  That is just unacceptable!  One night my husband changed a poopy diaper of G.B.’s right before bath time and he still pooped in the tub!  There has got to be a solution to this horrifying problem.  Giant Baby doesn’t seem to mind it though.  He seems almost pleased with himself, like it’s some sort of accomplishment to successfully poop in the bathtub that many times.  After an incident I have been known to ask an obvious question like:  “G.B., did you poop in the tub?”  His standard response is “Da.”  G.B. thinks he is Russian; “da” means “yes or yeah”.

G.B. is fascinated with all things “gross” or “dirty”.  Maybe that’s why he poops in the tub.  Unfortunately the nastiness doesn’t end there.  Oh no, Giant Baby takes it a step farther.  I wonder if he will always be an habitual line crosser” like his mom.  I hope not.  Last weekend G.B. touched his poop!  I almost cried when I saw him pick it up.  Before I could even react to the situation he already had it smeared behind his freshly washed ear and in his neck creases.  I was mortified.  Not only did I have to rescue C from the contaminated water but I had to drain it and re-wash G.B.  I know Giant Baby loves to take baths, he always gets upset when they end, but this is no way to prolong them.  After scrubbing the poop off of G.B. I took him out of the tub and dressed him.  Unfortunately he STILL smelled like poop!  So I used almost half of a box of wet wipes in an attempt to rid him of the stench; it didn’t work!  Finally I found a solution!  Anointing oil!  Hallelujah, thank the Lord.  I rubbed so much anointing oil on Giant Baby’s face and neck he looked like a greased pig.  But at least he didn’t smell like one!

This past Wednesday I had to take C to the doctor because he got croup.  While we were waiting for Dr. R. to write out a prescription C told him, “My baby brother likes to poop in the bath AND bite me on the butt.”  Dr. R. stopped writing and smiled up at me as if to say, “Interesting…”.  The way C so candidly told his doctor about his brother’s unflattering habits made me giggle.  Wow, thank you C for reminding me of the humor in every situation.  While the poop problem is disgusting and the images tend to “haunt me” it is really not the end of the world.  Some day this little problem of ours will eventually go away.  Until then, I will laugh at our bout of “bad luck” and remember that I am blessed to have 2 healthy, precious, baby boys.

Create in Him a New Heart, O God

A Heart for Mommy From Blakey 2/11

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh,” Ezekiel 36:26.

God!  Create in my son a NEW HEART, a WHOLE and HEALTHY heart!  God, I believe that you have given Blake a new heart.  A strong heart!  I claim it now!  I believe it!  My faith HAS HEALED Blake!  He is my son and I am claiming healing for him just as I claimed your healing for Connor.  You created in Connor a new lung.  You gave him life when there was only death and sickness.  You gave him health.  I believe that you have done the same for Blake!  I REFUSE to accept less!  We will see with our eyes tomorrow at the doctor what we know in our hearts to be true!  What I see in my faith, in my spirit, I will see with my eyes!

Lord you are FAITHFUL!  You are TRUE!  You uphold ALL of your promises!  You promised life and health and that is ALL that I accept for my children, for my husband, for our family, for myself!  Sickness, imperfections, defects, diseases and death have NO place here!!  Where you are, there can be no darkness Lord!  You live in Blake!  You are Jehovah Rapha.  You are the great physician!  You have healed Blake’s heart.  He is made whole in you.  He will tell of your mighty works.  He will praise you alone, O Lord, as will Connor, Nick, and I!  Blake will tell his generation what you have done for him.  To you be all the glory!  You reign!  Glory in the highest you reign!  Every knee shall bow and every tongue proclaim that Jesus reigns!

You are mighty to save Lord.  Ventricular septal defects have NO PLACE in my son’s heart!  You have saved Blake!  We accept his healing!  I do not accept anything but the best for him!  Though the defect is not hindering his growth or causing any other problems it is not of God!  I do not accept anything for my son that is not of God.  Lord God you are exalted forever.  Your name is above all names.  Your name is POWER!  I proclaim this power to be used to heal my son’s heart and I BELIEVE that he is HEALED!

Thank you God for a manifestation of the healing I believed for!  Thank you that you created in my son a NEW heart!  I LOVE YOU GOD!!!!

I Love You, You Little Nut

He calls himself “old man”

I dropped my old man off at preschool this morning and thanks to my grandpa picking fat baby up beforehand we arrived somewhat early.  As we pulled into the parking lot I couldn’t help but chuckle; my O.M. was very opinionated about his appearance this morning.  He simply had to wear his cowboy hat which he crookedly squished to the top of his head and a whistle on a yellow lanyard hung around his neck.  Before I had the chance to unbuckle his car seat he gave his whistle one last ear-piercing blow and beamed up at me; I love him.  Once unbuckled, he took my hand in his adorable, little one and waited for me to lead him inside (we don’t walk through a parking lot without holding hands, he might “get hit by a car and die” – as he so candidly puts it).

As we approached the church (his preschool is located in a church) O.M. decided it was time to “race” inside!  As we “raced” my heart melted at the look of determination mixed with joy on his sweet, little face as he ran toward the door.  After congratulating him on his win, we made our way down the whimsically decorated hall to the restrooms for a quick wash and then we were off to his classroom.

March is officially here!  It looked as though my O.M.’s teachers had been busy taking down any trace of February left hanging in their class.  Bye-bye pink and red, bye-bye hearts!  Hello green and yellow, hello shamrocks!  After signing him in, I hung up his red pullover and Buzz Lightyear backpack in his very own little cubby, complete with his precious picture and name tag.

O.M. and I made our way from his cubby to the table situated in the center of the room where Mrs. P. was rolling out freshly made, green play-doh for the preschoolers to play with.  O.M. took a seat at the table and quickly grabbed a small, yellow, play knife to shape his mound of play-doh while I grabbed a small mound of my own; I couldn’t resist!  The play-doh was still warm and it smelled wonderful, it had that comforting smell that only homemade play-doh has.  My family loves play-doh!  As I was mindlessly rolling the beautiful, green play-doh in my hands O.M.’s teachers started to giggle to one another.

Mrs. F. asked Mrs. P.  if she had told me the story that O.M. told them last week; my heart sank a little.  As Mrs. P. explained that she had not told me the story I began to feel a little nervous.; I quickly interjected.  “It wasn’t an inappropriate story, was it,” I asked?  “Oh no.  Nothing like that, it was actually cute.  We wrote it down for you.  You should put it in his baby book,” explained Mrs. F.  I was totally relieved!  Sometimes my incredibly imaginative son says the most inappropriate things!  How inappropriate can a 3-year-old be?  Apparently very inappropriate; he comes by it naturally of course, I am his mother.  Let me give you an example.  My son LOVES soda.  He doesn’t get it much but when he does, look out!  One particularly sugary afternoon, maybe a month ago,  O.M. was running around the house telling wild stories as usual.  But one story in particular caught my attention; brace yourselves and bear in mind, he had no idea how disgusting and strange his comment was.  He said, “Mommy, sometimes when I drink soda, candy explodes out of my pee pee into my mouth and then candy explodes out of my butt into the potty”.  Now you understand why I was having a mini panic attack when his teachers casually informed me that O.M. had told them a story.  Anyway, O.M. told his teachers about a little incident we had at home last week while preparing for a weekend in Grand Lake with my in-laws.

O.M. and fat baby were in the tub and I was at the sink curling my hair.  It had been a long and tiring day and it was only 4 p.m.  I was letting the boys take a long bath so I could finish my hair and so they would be content and in one place for more than 5 minutes.  O.M. and fat baby were playing together so well!  I actually thought to myself, “I am one lucky mom”!  Then, as if someone flipped a switch, they were fighting.  O.M. took a toy from fat baby, fat baby splashed O.M. in the face, the list goes on.  I tried my best to squash the brewing bath-time brawl and get on with fixing my hair and for a short time my plan worked.  Then O.M. started aggravating his brother again.  Luckily, fat baby seemed to ignore it.  I warned O.M. that if he kept aggravating his brother he would be sorry but my warnings fell on deaf ears.  Just as I turned back around to face the mirror I heard O.M. scream at the top of his lungs.  I looked over to see him stand up and turn bright red.  Amidst the hysterical crying and blood curdling screams I managed to figure out what had happened.  Fat baby finally had enough of his big brother’s antics and decided to take revenge into his own hands in the form of his own type of corporal punishment.  He bit O.M. on the butt!!  My sweet, baby boy has always been a bit of a biter but this was over the line even for him!

Apparently having “a chunk bitten out of his butt” scarred my old man so much that he felt it necessary to share his horrifying experience  at school.  This is how he told the story to his teachers: “I was takin’ a bath with fat baby and I kept pokin’ him and pokin’ him and I didn’t stop so he bit a chunk out of my butt!  My baby thought my butt was macaroni and cheese”!

After leaving the preschool I got in my car and headed to work.  I smiled the whole way there, thinking of what a creative, funny, special gift I have in my O.M.; I am looking forward to the laughter-filled years ahead.

Thank you God for choosing me to be his mom!  Guide me in training him in the way he should go, teach me how to nurture his creativity and show me how to love him.  But most of all, let me always see what a blessing he truly is!  Amen!
