Healthy Addiction

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to read!  I cannot get enough of books.  I find myself excitedly awaiting the end of the day when work is over, the kids are in bed, and I have time to read!  The promise of adventure and intrigue is so alluring.  I get lost in another time, a totally foreign world and I cherish every second of it.  I realize what a nerd I am for being so entranced by the people, places, and things of my literary adventures but I can’t help it.  Reading is my escape.  I become so engrossed in the drama of my books that I feel as though the people in them are real.  I sit on the edge of my seat as the scenes play out in my mind unfolding word by word by word, page by page, and chapter by chapter.  As the book draws to a close I am hungrier by the second; I have to know what happens, the suspense builds up until I can’t stand it any longer.  I race to the end like a runner finishing a marathon.  I am overjoyed yet I already long for a new chapter in the saga, another twist in the plot; I am not ready for it to be over.  I am very drawn to series books for this reason.  I mourn the end of my friendships, the loss of my new “secret place”.  I don’t usually enjoy re-reading the same book.  I feel as though the puzzle has already been put together, the mystery has been solved.  I need to move on to bigger and better things.  There are new worlds to be discovered, unique creatures to meet, adventures to begin.  It is a conquest, a way to live out my fantasies, an outlet.  Each new book is like a dream that doesn’t end when I open my eyes and it is not soon forgotten.

My hope is that I will instill my great love of literature in my children and my children’s children and on through the generations.  So I will continue to read to them every day and to share my passion with them because books are truly magical things; like a world within a world just waiting to be discovered.
